yeah, maos book is ranked number two, the little red book. it is against the law to own one. at one time, in china, you could be asked to quote from the little red book, and every person had to carry one, and if you didnt......whack!
his long march was also a monumental triumph for him politically. this solidified his position as the leader for the chinese people. he was deemed extraordinary for this accomplishment for he led 87000 soldiers that were under attach by chiang kai-shek, and sure to be slaughtered, on a risky escape which lasted 370 days. only 10000 made the 8000 mile trek to safety. but he became one of the people on this march. if someone was hungry, and the were, he gave up his rice. if they were barefoot, he gave them his shoes. these actions gave him the power he was looking for and his relentless march to save his troops. but, dont get me wrong, he was still a bad buy, a dictator!
his other, the great leap forward, was a great failure. mao tried to accomplish economic stability by skipping the rules of economic growth that each society must go through to succeed.

In response to the one who said that he is a best selling author:
Of course, some 900 million have read his book! Why? Because it was required for every Chinese citizen to read it.
Now you know how megalomaniacal (if such a word exists) Chairman Mao is.
Well, I think his greatest accomplishment would be the great disruption he caused on Chinese society by unleashing the cultural revolution and keeping China from becoming the world power that it is today.
After his death, everything in China literally improved especially the economy, social stability and politics.

1. Between the Cultural Revolution and the Great Leap Forward, he probably killed more people than Stalin or Hitler did, thus making him the 20th century's undisputed Heavyweight Champion of Mass Murder. 2. Messing up so many things so badly that he showed the future Chinese leadership exactly what NOT to do in order to be successful. Mao was the quintessential bad example.

It was probably the Long March (actually there was more than one) during which Mao consolidated his dominance over the Chinese Communist Party and the Red Army ensuring their continued existence. Like a lot of revolutionaries Mao was good at the logistics of attaining power but was a disaster when ruling a state.

promulgating the Great Leap Forward and the Cultural Revolution and thus directly killing.....hell, we'll never know for sure but most estimates are 20-30 MILLION Chinese, which makes Mao a greater mass murderer than Hitler or Stalin.
