Trick question.
Some would say that the treatment of Germany by the Allied powers after the great War set up European WWII.
Others would cite Hitler's naked greed as a strong factor and an unwillingness by Europe to stop him

Everyone.
You can blame Hitler alone, but the entire German people let him happen, and the Allies of WWI put such crushing conditions into the Treaty of Versailles that if it hadn't been Hitler it would have been someone, the US and Britain waited too long to stop him early, Stalin cooperated with him for a while, Neville Chamberlain misread him, France's defense policy was so foolish that it invited an attack, and specifically one that involved the low countries, Japan's own expansionist dreams of empire, the US's inconstant policies toward Japan..
the list goes on. There was a lot of blame to go around.

Gavrillo Princip
Since the ultimate cause of WWII was the political instability created by the collapse of the German and Austrian monarchies, and the injustice of the treaties that were forced on the Central Powers following the Great War, and since the Great War was the result of the series of event precipitated by Princip's assasnination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand, if you want someone to blame for the Second World War it has to be him.

Fraid this is along convoluted answer but it goes back to the Treaty of Versailles after WW1.
Germany was right royally screwed over by the Allies and practically gutted, creating a LOT of unrest and hatred in germany. She could barely support herself and the financial fines put upon her crippled what was left. The country then went into a severe depression, the worst ever seen which caused greater animosity.
The Nazi party then began to rise to prominence in one area of the country and got support as it talked of german independence and pride again. They gradually gained support then started to put the frighteners on other parties in the 20's/30's until it got to be in control of the country and started to build it up again.
Hitler was merely the tip of the whole sussurtaing boil created by the extreme reparations laid upon Germany by the Allies.
So Hitler was in part to blame, but the way in which Germany was treated after WW1 gave a good basis for WW2.
So you could say it was German Pride that began the war.

The Germans. World War II was a confluence of two conflicts respectively started in China (the Second Sino-Japanese War), and in Poland (the Invasion of Poland).

Actually, if you study your history, it was the countries that won World War I. Had they not treated Germany like they did, Hitler would have never come to power.

Ultimately I guess it was Hitler. Germany invaded Poland in 1939 on his orders, and that was the event that started the war (although there had been political tension throughout the 30s)

you gotta be kidding! Hitler was trying to take over the world. He attacked and conquered the weaker countries around Germany, and then declared war on Brittan. The U.S.A. was staying out of the war, largely at the urging of Congress. Japan sucked us in with the attack on Pearl harbor, and the rest is history
