I've noticed my horse looks quite tired and depressed when the weathers bad particularly if its wet and windy even when he's inside and is really cheeky and full of life when its sunny? Are all horses like this?

All winter our horses are sort of "blah." They like to go outside and run around, but most of the time they just hang out in their stalls. If it's snowing or the weather is bad, most of them just sleep all day. My mare gets exceptionally cranky all winter, and acts like a grumpy old witch! When spring comes around, they all turn into different horses! Ours are show horses, so I'm not sure if it's knowing that good weather means shows, or that good weather means happy horses! But they really start to get frisky, and some even act up on those first few days of spring, cos they are so excited.

My horse actually threw a fit when the weather got bad here. This year it was in the 70's and then it snowed a week later. My horse was so upset that she became really naughty and wouldn't work. I think the change really screwed with her inner clock or something. The last week has been beautiful, and her whole attitude has changed back to this spunky young horse!

Just like people suffer from vitamin deficiencies during winter, I think horses may as well, especially the ones who don't get to go outside all the time. Plus they get a lot of vitamins and minerals from the dirt and grass, and in winter they don't get those as readily, so I'm sure that accounts for some of it too.

I'm sure the weather affects animals the way it does people they must feelor not feel good when the weather is foul.Look at dogs when it's rainy and cold they like to just blaza in the house and sleep . When the weather starts to warm up the tails go up and they prance and run and play the horses.

i think it is true that horse's have SAD. i work as a free lance groom and in the winter my clients tend to stable their horse's. i find this makes the horse's seem depressed, lathagic, grumpy and aggressive, go off food and become stiffer. sometimes i find they can also charge around while being schooled for no reason at all.

however in the summer they seem happy, put on weight, become more free moving and more responsive in the work they do. also they seem to enjoy being outdoors having rolls and sunbathing.
