I have a friend who is getting her car a tune up and oil change...the car is a 2000 Honda (Passport I think). The garage is saying its taking 7 hours! Thats seems really extreme to me, or am I just way off?

Not all vehicles have all of the spark plugs visable, I had a 2001 Nissan Pathfinder in the shop yesterday with the coil on plug design, the only way to get to one of the plugs is to remove the throttle body, the job takes 1.7 hours for 6 plugs. I also had one of the newer Dodge Hemi Ram's in a few weeks ago, that job takes 2.6 hours for the 16 plugs it has (not a V16 people, its a 2 plug per cylinder set up). I've seen some where to do the plugs you have to remove the intake manifold, and I've seen one where you actually had to drop the engine 6 inches to get one. There are some stupid designs out there and not everything is right there for the technician. Even some of the simplest things can take a long time to do on some vehicles.

As for the vehicle staying there all day. Most shops do that. At the shop i'm at, we are usually pretty good with appointments but there are the odd times where we have a job and something unexpected comes up and we are thrown from our appointment schedual. We usually try to keep cars for the day, unless its a simple job, because of time and how things seem to work. We have a smaller 5 bay shop, and on average, we will have 4-10 vehicles at one time, we can handle the 4 or 5 at a time, but the other 5 will just have to wait until we get a bay freed up. A lot of it is first come first serve.

I do not know the Pasport personally, so I don't know how the engine looks, but I have seen some stupid designs from Honda in the past and it wouldn't suprise me that doing the plugs take 7 hours, even though it does seem on the high side, unless the vehicle is just at the shop for that long and the job only takes 4 or something. that could be it too. If you must, ask them as for why it takes so long.

Others are right, even for a 2 hr job in my shop, I ask people to drop the car off for all day. I usually end up juggling several jobs at once, so by the clock, they seem to take longer than they really do. And by the way, not every mechanic or shop is trying to sell you something you don't need, like some of these answers would make you think. Just be sure to go to reputable shops that you have checked out, you'll be fine.

I doubt the work will take 7 hours. However just about every shop requests that the car be left there so they can do the work durning the day. It's a first come first serve. I have yet to find a shop that will do repair work by appointments. unless it's one of the mobil repair shops.

some times garages(like mine) has severals car waiting in line for the same purposes.

but YOU HAVE to be there, some garages change parts(stealing),and subsecuently need time.

I am a Mechanic and shop owner, one day while in the road ,I stop ,in a road side's garage, for oil change on my Mercedes and one of the Mechanics was trying to change the stickshift linkage.

Ask them what a 7 hour tune up consists of. Maybe they have a logical explanation or maybe not .Check around at other shops and find one with a good reputation.

Seven hours for a tune up!!!! Sounds to me like they are taking your friend for a ride. 1 to 2 hours to do the job.

To replace the distributor cap, rotors, spark plugs/wires would take about 2 hrs...an oil change and topping off all the fluids, add another half hr.
Are they doing a diagnostic test to check your auto's computer sensors?
If they charge for more than 3 hrs labor your friend is getting ripped off!

7 hours labor yeah. 7 Hours in a busy garage to complete and return to her; not that unusual.
