why do we have one in the first place if its just going to get broken?

As a baby or a child the hymen protects the vagina from dirt and germs. Like when a mother is changing the babies diaper.
Also a damaged hymen is a sign of abuse and incest.
In different cultures they forbid sex before marriage and the hymen was a sign of purity.
Thats all that i can think of at this point.

It's just a residual membrane from early development. I don't know why people even care if it's "broken" anyway, as it's unimportant to any function.

We haven't fully evolved yet. Why do we still have a tail bone? tonsils?
