All depends what kind of dongle it is, some of them have built-in wireless adapters.

I think you may be getting your devices confused. A dongle is a device that unlocks a piece of software or interfaces some hardware. If the Device (you cll a dongle) it a wireless device it may work. I am assuming the Wireless is a WI FI wireless network in which case you are going to need a WIFI card. If it is a bluetooth or Infrared system you may be able to do it by going round the houses a bit. But you can "let others use this network connection" on the main computer and assuming you have a bluetooth or Infrared device on you main computer you can use this as the connection for your laptop

If its blue tooth no.You need a wifi adaptor. There are 3 wireless standards in use at the moment. The best one for you to get is a wireless g adaptor as this will work with all standards.Take a look at the basic tutorial on the linksys site its very good.
If you do decide to buy an adaptor look on the Morgan computers website you can get a linksys srx 400 there for about £13 and its a lot neater than your "dongle"

The only thing a dongle will do is allow a physical connection from your laptop to a network. It simply plugs into an ethernet card.

Laptop > Ethernet card > Dongle > RJ45 (Network Cable).

The desktop needs a wireless card,it may look like a card with an antenna, and a wireless router to allow the two computers to connect wirelessly or wi-fi.

If the "Dongle" you are referring to is a USB WiFi adapter, yes.

Just plug it in and it should work in XP.

If not, go to the dongle manufacturer's web site for the driver.

as long as it has a USB port you can get a USB wireless adaptor that just plugs in. Will cost around £30 (UK)
