What I mean is, why are there tears for visiting Egyptian students killed in a rampage in the US and little concern about the same type of event when it happens in the middle east?

Their families and friends grieve in any case.
As for the rest of us, we are shocked by a "senseless" killing that we feel is abnormal, random, and which challenges our sense of reality. We are mourning a sense of worldly order as much as the deaths, in fact more so if we have no connection to the individuals.
When I say this, I am not belittling this feeling. A sense of order in the world is a life-and-death matter; we need to know where the dangers are so we can protect ourselves and others. The nation that there is a danger we don't understand and can't protect against is profoundly upsetting. It is also part of life, just as the death of a loved one is.
