That price sounds about right for a 98 gs-t with that many miles. For a 9 year old car that puts the average miles 16,000 per year compared to the national average which is about 12,500.
Looked up the car on Kelley Blue Book:
Good ------$4,835
"Good" condition means that the vehicle is free of any major defects. This vehicle has a clean title history, the paint, body and interior have only minor (if any) blemishes, and there are no major mechanical problems. There should be little or no rust on this vehicle. The tires match and have substantial tread wear left. A "good" vehicle will need some reconditioning to be sold at retail. Most consumer owned vehicles fall into this category.
Fair-------$4,185
"Fair" condition means that the vehicle has some mechanical or cosmetic defects and needs servicing but is still in reasonable running condition. This vehicle has a clean title history, the paint, body and/or interior need work performed by a professional. The tires may need to be replaced. There may be some repairable rust damage.
Have a certified mechanic check out the car (this should cost less than $100). The money spent on checking the car out may save you a lot more money and hassle in the long run. If you can find out the history such as when the timing belt and other belts were changed? Any thing that was replaced such as the tranny. Ask for the car's maintenance record. If the owner doesn't have copies, contact the dealership or repair shop where most of the work was done. They may share their files with you.
If the car does have some problems, ask the mechanic the approximate cost of repairing any defects. Minor problems which can easily be repaired can be used to negotiate a lower price but a car with major problems should be avoided. The mechanic will probably do a compression check which basically tells you how much life is left in the engine.
Good luck with your decision.

Well I had a 1993 with about150k miles on it so the car your looking at has some high mileage. My guess would be that car with some good preventive maintanence it can last 6 years. The price sounds a little steep for such high mileage, I would suggest looking up the car model on Kelly Blue Book and checking CarFax to see if there have been any major issues with it, the last thing you want is to spend 4000 dollars on a car and have to spend about 2000 for a new transmission
Hope this helps.

there's a few questions to think about to know if it's worth it.
1. if u need a car that will work for some 2 years, this would work.
2. if u don't go long distance or road trip.
3. if u or know someone who can work on car because u will probably be putting some money to repair wear and tear.
4. it would help to know how well the previous owner(s) take care of the car
5. older mitsu cars are well known with transmission prob
6. be good to have a mechanic inspect the car
it's not a great value. personally i will go with a toyota or honda if i'm looking for a high mileage vehicle.

Kiss the tranny goodbye. I bet the trans in that one has already been rebuilt several times.
Get up under the car and look for a rebuild tag on the trans.....I bet you $100 its got one on it!
That car was suppose to be "sporty" but if you drove it like a sports car then the trans would only last for 40K miles
You buy that car, and you will become a money horse for every local mechanic.
I bought one in 99 with only 35k miles on it and guess what........the trans had already been rebuilt.

Spend a few bucks and have a good mechanic give it a thorough inspection before deciding on it, it could save you thousands. He could tell you what is going to be needed in a few months time and what is bad now, it's way too easy to buy it and in 6 months time put a whole pile of money into it because of springs, exhaust, brakes etc, etc ....
