To prevent pirating of software, Microsoft has a check in its OSs (2000, XP and Vista) that check to be sure that it is still install on hte original computer. By changing the mobo and processor, Windows will probably decided it is not on the same computer and refuse to start. You will need to contact Microsoft (check web site for current 800 number) and tell them what you did. They will be able to clear the activation code that your current version of Windows will work with the new mobo and processor (no charge).

Once cleared, you should be able to boot the PC and use the hard drive "as is". But will probably need to run the disc that came with your new mobo to add the proper drivers for the board itself and any build in devices (video, audio, modem, network card, etc).

I have successfully moved hard drives between computers many times. The main issue is getting the Windows activation to work.

Too many to mention. It simply won't work. All operating systems collect information about your system and customize themselves to match them, upon installation. So if you change the motherboard you'll end up with the wrong system settings. There's no other way than to reinstall your OS, and all other software as well.

EDIT

I'm not surprised about your video problems at all. You're pretty lucky that the rest seems to work. Of course it boots up, using the standard VGA and disk drivers, but if you want maximum performance, and your video to work again, you really should reinstall your OS.

You do not tell what your OS is, but if it is Windows XP you may just be running a new evaluation period. In that case Windows is telling you to register.

hope this answers your question:-

the OS contains all the device drivers and configuration of the hardware in your motherboard...so changing the mb and processor means changing the devices...
so if you donot reinstall your os your computer will not boot up...because it will not find any drivers for your new devices in your new mb....
