William Cutting is based on Bill 'the Butcher' Poole who was a top notch butcher and head of a gang on the West Side of NYC around the Christopher St. area. (Sort of like a mini godfather.) He had family, was over 6 foot tall and medium build, in case you were interested. In February, 1855, a man named Lew Baker critically wounded Poole in Stanwix Hall, over on lower Hudson St., after a long and nasty dispute between Poole, Baker and several other men. Poole died fourteen days later and was buried in Greenwood Cemetery, Brooklyn.
The movie, 'The Gangs of New York' took facts from actual historic events, then fictionalized them. The setting for the film takes place in what is now Chinatown, close to City Hall and not the West Side of Manhattan. It's an amazing movie, very violent, and Daniel Day Lewis did a superb job as a creepy Bill the Butcher.
