The SSID is the ID of your wireless router. You can type http://193.168.0.1 into your browser. Then that should connect you to your wireless router. It will ask for user name (admin is the default) and password (password is usually the default) and then go through the menus and decide what you are going to call your network. You can then search for networks and it will find yours or give you a list - if there are more around locally. Check for a label on the bottom of your router for info - that's where they usually put it. They usually have a hole in the back too - you poke that with a pen and it presses a switch that sets the router back to default settings. You will probably see a passphrase in the router menus. Type something in and it will give you an encryption key - choose WEP for encryption - not as secure as WPA but easier to set up. Then make a note of the key the passphrase generates. Your laptop will ask for that when you try to connect. Goof luck - you'll need it! LOL

An SSID is used to hook your computer to a secured wireless network. You would have to get the password for the network from whoever runs that network. (Meaning if you are trying to hack into a neighbor's wireless network, you would have to get the password from them).

If you are trying to create your own wireless network, and you have wireless router, you can use to Wireless Wizard in the Control Panel to set up an SSID and Password on your own router.

Your SSID is the unique identity of your broadband router.
It is used to set up computers to connect to the router wirelessly.

Your broadband provider should have given you the SSID (possibly on a label on the router) and the password.
