fashion victims of the highest calibre.
obviously they all read Heat magazine and couldn't bear to be the only one with out the tacky bag.
its so sad that otherwise normal reasonable people go nuts for somehting because of hype.
people have been using non plastic bags for longer than they have been using plastic ones so whats the big deal?

I have this bag and I didn't get it because I wanted to be like all the celebrities in Heat magazine, I got it because I love the designer Anya Hindmarch (and would never usually be able to afford a bag by her), it was great value and above all, it's environmentally friendly, raises awareness about how we shouldn't be using plastic bags (or at least recycling old ones) and looks great whilst doing your part towards saving the planet. By the way, I wasn't queueing up at Sainsburys at 3am, I got mine off the internet about 6 weeks ago when they were first released. Why people have to be so narrow minded when the whole idea of this bag is a great one, is beyond me. The very people that criticise these bags are probably the kind of people who don't ever do anything to save the environment!!

I live in the US, so I had to search "sainsbury's bag". The concept, from the BBC News report I saw, seems great-- To help curb the overuse of plastic shopping bags. I HATE those things. Unfortunately, I don't have the magazine with me now (I'm not sure where it is), but the March issue of "Body and Soul" magazine gives a stat of how much petroleum is used for the production and manufacturing of plastic bags. It's disgusting. It's disgusting when I see plastic bags in the a creek and the the creek bed threatening wildlife.
It's my understanding that it's common practice in European grocery stores to NOT just give out bags, they charge for them. I like that concept. Aldi, a German grocery store that has come to the US, does that here. When I would walk to the grocery store (the one that is by the aforementioned creek and creek bed) by my last home, I would take my own canvas bag, partially becuase it was easier to carry home than the plastic ones. Yet, despite my bag being obvious, the bag-happy bag boys would still put my purchases in plastic bags. They would do that even after I told them that I either had my own bag or that I would bag them myself. Then they would get miffed at me. Go figure.
I liked the BBC comment on Wal-Mart. During Earth Week (which I think should have been this week, since Earth Day was on Sunday, but I digress), I saw a couple of Wal-Mart's "look how green we are" commercials. Okay. So they're cutting packaging on some things. Yet, I have been there and cashiers have put one small item in one small bag before I could even say, "I dont' want a bag." Gee, if they cut back on those bags, just imagine how much greener they could be. (I went to the webpage, www.wal-mart.com/green and wasn't impressed.
(Petroleum is also used to make new paper, over stuff that's recycled.)
My husband and I (I started it, and have encouraged him to do so) have started to take paper bags that we've already collected to the grocery store. They're not only stronger, but easier to recycle if they do rip.
Yet, I'm not doing any of this because it's the Hollywood trend of the second. I'm doing this becasue it's who I am. I was raised recycling, my husbnad was not. (I still cringe when I see recycleable stuff tossed in my in-laws' house, and take home what I can to recycle because I can't stand to throw it away.) Yet, I've taught him quite a bit and we're not learning from each other. (I've not yet looked at the related stories on the BBC page.)
Okay. I'm off my soapbox now.

People (ie- women) are buying them because they think that they will be envied by other women. They think that being envied by other women will make them feel cool, and fashionable, and perhaps make them more popular.
It demonstrates that they have seriously no style of their own, and have to buy magazines to tell them what to wear.
In order to feel like they are participating in society, they feel they have to visibly consume, and because this bag has an eco agenda, they have their conscience eased about the conspicuous consumption, which is a weird paradox.

eco warriors + fashion victims + celebrity wanabees = someone who would buy one of these stupid bags! These sort of people love to make a statement and love to be noticed. The funniest thing is that before they were sold for £5 at Sainsbury's they were being auctionned for hundreds of pounds on eBay - SUCKERS!!!!

i think you are referring to the anya hindmarch bag that says 'im not a plastic bag' on it. its been so hyped because it only costs £5 to buy but has been seen on just about all of the celebrities. plus its good for the environment which is apparently big on governments agenda so people think having it is cool. people are buying a £5 on ebay for hundreds just because 'celebrities' have them.
