This song (by Johnny Cash) was released on his 'American IV - The Man Comes Around' album in 2002 - about 6 months BEFORE June Carter died. In fact, if you've seen the remarkable video he made for it, June Carter is there with him.
Personally, I've always thought his rendition of the song (and the video) was his knowledge of his own impending death - the video has clips from throughout his life. I've got to admit I was never a big Johnny Cash fan, but that video and song really moved me, it was like he was saying goodbye.
June Carter died in May 2003, and Johnny sadly followed only 4 months later.

Cash proably liked the song since it reminded him of himself.(He was a drug abuser right?) Gotta disagree with the dude who said Cash made it his song. I played Hurt a million times when I was going through a rough patch so it'll forever be Trent Reznors' song for me.

"Hurt" is originally written and performed by Trent Reznor and Nine Inch Nails, the song was written about his addiction to heroin and the loss of his girl. It came out on their "Downward Spiral" album in 1994.
Johnny Cash took on the song because he felt it symbolized his "hurt" for the loss of his wife, June. It was a way of saying he couldn't live without her, which is somewhat similar to the Nine Inch Nails meaning, only Johnny was probably hurting more from old age than heroin.

I myself would Go for this one it sounds better! Johnny Cash Thing Called Love Lyrics
Six foot six stood on the ground, weighted 235 pounds
But I saw that giant of a man brought down to his knees by love
He was the kind of man who would gamble on love
Look you in the eye and never back up
But I saw him crying like a little whipped pup because of love
Can't see it with your eyes, hold it in your hands
Like the rules that govern our land
Strong enough to rule the heart of every man, this thing called love
It can lift you up, it can put you down
Take your world and turn it all around
Ever since time nothing's ever been found stronger than love
Men like me they worry and doubt
Trouble their minds day in and day out
Too busy a livin' to worry about a thing called love
And then I see a mother's tenderness
As she holds her young close to her breast
Then I say thank God this world will win with the thing called love
