It is a 1995 Escort LX. I was told at a shop that it will cost about $260 per side. That sounds like a lot to me, so I'm planning to get a second opinion. Is $260 per side a reasonable price, or should I shop around?

It's pretty close. Your looking around $100 bucks per Axle. then about 130 to 150 to install them. Labor in my area is 80 to 100 an hour depending on the shop. it's about a 1 1/2 hour job per side. According to the book. I would shop around a bit or even see if it would be cheaper (Part wise) if you bought the part and just paid to have someone put it in. It's often cheaper this way. However some shops will not guaranty the work. they prefer to use the parts from their supplier. However a little secret, Unless it's a dealers (And some dealers do this too if the car is too old) most independent shops get the parts from the same part stores that you can get the parts from. Most use Napa.
