Aztec276: sorry if you think it's a vague question; it's actually based on a famous statement by Samuel Johnson (i.e., "Patriotism is the last refuge of a scoundrel.").
Does the fact I am asking the question mean I necessarily agree with the statement? What strange logic you are exhibiting there...

I would say, ask any politician....they can answer that far better than I...but seriously, I have noticed that frequently when nasty things are afoot, people will try and justify them through their patriotism. In Nazi Germany, they were ..."only following orders..." as they exterminated millions of people. In Rwanda, people were hacked to pieces in the name of tribal solidarity. In America, we conquered all of the Indigenous peoples because of 'Manifest Destiny". The patriot is not a scoundrel if he wins, because he gets to write the history. He's only a scoundrel if he loses...

Yes, and a better quote was never made!

I can think of many people in the US that don't know what that means...and worse...do not understand the meaning of patriotism or scoundrel.

Just from the top of my head I'm thinking people like Alex Baldwin , Sean Penn, and Jane Fonda.

Freedom is not just another word. It takes much commitment and sacrifice to defend it!

Dick Cheney would heartily disagree...but the words and actions of the Bush -Cheney regime show that quote truthfully applicable. Misusing the "Patriot Act" to get away with illegal wiretapping, and detaining human beings indefinitely without being charged with any specific crime, to start with..
Anyone who disagrees with the regime is dismissed as unpatriotic and invited to go on a hunting trip with Dick.
If the shoe fits..pepper the soul with buckshot.
OK...Loyal Bushies take aim.

The greatest examples of patriotism are never proclaimed in the present, but pointed out by peers in retrospect. A true patriot would never claim to be one. The same applies to someone who is supposedly a "hero".

That's an immensly vague question.

I can only conclude that you don't care for patriotic people.
