I want to use it for editing film, writing screenplays, music (I will have Itunes and I want to record music. Taking into account various Microsoft programs and Internet Explorer I guess it'll have to be quite big? Editing on my laptop is dreadful.

If you could help on processors, etc (what kind would be best) I would be really grateful. I've never done this kind of thing before.

Mrhanky9 is right...

Regardless of what you choose, from your description it sounds like you'll want something with ALOT of RAM; a high quality, fast processor; and a large, fast hard drive.

Indeed that is what I want. Your answers so far haver been great. The more informative the better. You've all got something thaat contributes towards the building of my computer.

I have been building computers for years. I reccommend:

MB - EVGA, ABIT, or ASUS with nvidia chipsets
CPU - Core 2 Duo E6700 - get from newegg.com right now good deals
MEM- OCZ sli ddr2 1066MHz - good deal at outpost.com for dual channel
Vid CRD- Go with GeForce 8800 gts especially if you are doing lots of high end video editing

The rest is up to you.

Just my two cents...

We're all biased, but I agree with "Chetu". AMD all the way. Also, get a motherboard with a fast bus, and one that can handle alot of RAM.

As far as processors really go, just make sure that you get a PREMIUM Intel or AMD processor. Stay away from stuff like the Celeron or Sempron. They lack level 2 cache and don't perform as well.

You might want to get a motherboard which supports SATA, ESATA or even SCSI hard drives. IDE (also known as ATA, or PATA) is becoming a thing of the past). I'm getting confused with all of the terminology, please correct me if I'm wrong.

If you're recording music you'll probably have some sort of interface which acts as a standalone sound card (digidesign or something like that right?)? If so, you don't need anything fancy built into the motherboard.

Regardless of what you choose, from your description it sounds like you'll want something with ALOT of RAM; a high quality, fast processor; and a large, fast hard drive.

CHETU IS WRONG
get a core 2 duo processor with 2.4 ghz or 2.67
EVGA 122-CK-NF68-A1 LGA 775 NVIDIA nForce 680i SLI ATX Intel Motherboard
i would get no doubt 2gb of ram or even 4.
a 500gb hard drive and if more is needed you can use an external one. if you want an even better processor then i reccomend the intel core 2 extreme but this already costs 1000$ for the processor itself, so it is very expensive as opposed to the core 2 duo which is about 400$
as for video cards i reccomend the XFX GeForce 7900 GS Extreme / 256MB GDDR3 which is about 160$
or the XFX PVT84GUDD3 GeForce 8600GTS 256MB 128-bit GDDR3 PCI Express x16 HDCP Video Card which is about 220$ but much better
