Can anyone tell me what would be worth investing my money in? Action figures and the like that will be worth more in the future? What should I look for when buying?

You will never be sure what will increase in value in the future. Georgian, victorian, candlesticks used to be sought after and fetch a good price, they don't now. Many people have become minimalistic, clutter isn't the flavour of the month right now. If you want to collect, choose something you like, that's small. Try to settle on something that is quality and part of our history/heritage. I have collected Robertsons golly brooches for twenty years, small, and display well. (not what you'd call quality maybe :-) I have also some silk postcards from 1st world war, they're interesting. Beautiful cards, from an ugly brutal period. Starting collecting now though isn't cheap mostly, unless you strike lucky. Just pick something you can keep/display that satisfies your eye and your heart and don't EXPECT it to be valuable in the future, although it may well be.

You said action figures. Most will not be able to get you any return on your money. Some will, if you buy a rare one from several years ago. But that market is very fickle; what worth 100 today may by worth 25 next week.

You also have to save the box and every little detail that came with it. To buy a new action model on the premise that it would be a good investment to sell down the line is anyone's guess.

Even if you luck out and strike gold, you have to sell it. You just can't take an action figure down to the exchange and trade it. If it's very hot, you may have little trouble of selling it at the rated value or above. Or, you may sit on it and sit on it waiting for a buyer who wants this collectible.

My advice is to buy what you like but don't spend all your life savings on this in hopes of building the family fortune. It just won't work.

It seems over the years a lot of things have come and gone. One that has not is coins. To do well there, one must be one step ahead of a dealer. If you pick a series of coins make sure you study up on them. You want to know what varieties are rare, for a lot of dealers have so many coins, they let a lot of rare ones slip by. Most older coins go up in value anyway, it maybe a slow process on some of them, but one makes out okay in 20 or so years.
