i've experienced that websites like microsoft, yahoo, apple, macromedia are pretty fast, i guess it's because of server locations, what i need to know is if we can make any other website that fast like by changing proxies or whatever... my normal download speed is 10 kB/s but when i download from yahoo, microsoft or some other sites it's 150-250 kB/s, i wish every website was like this.

Those big companies (yahoo!, Microsoft, etc.) have many servers and mirror servers and backup servers around the world. It seems faster because they duplicate data and you access the server nearest to you.
Sometimes data that is "frequently" looked at will be stored on the server closest to you which is your Internet provider.

You cannot make websites load faster by changing proxies. If the data is not duplicated or found on a server closer to you then the speed will not change.

Not every site has the same huge budget as the big boys, bandwidth cost $$ ,more you have, more you have to pay, thats why many uses a data center, and some just host in-house.

Also remember how many people are accessing the site concurrently, think of a pie, if only 2 people eating it, they all get bigger slices, now the same pie shared between 200 people......

Unfortnately I don't believe there is anything you could do on your side to make downloads quicker.
This is all server-side related stuff.
The way you program a website is the most relevant issue when it comes to how fast a website will be.
Even big companies with big money can have such complex sites they will be slow to launch on brandwitch as well.

Sorry if it is not a big help :(

money...

Large companies have dedicated servers in multiple locations around the world. You are automatically directed to the fastest one.

Small websites with static content can be fast depending on their popularity and the ISP's service. Hosting in a shared or virtual dedicated server may still have unreliable bandwidth.

Some sites just suck....

The "lighter" sites load quicker.

Those with heavy graphics and sound etc, will, naturally take a longer time.

Then, there's the cookies that you already have onboard for your regular sites that helps them load quicker.

Cheers!
