Unfortunately that's the way the system works. This is why very few teams are interested in trading up in to the top 5 and why a lot of teams try to trade down in the draft. The problem with JaMarcus Russell is that a lot of Oakland fans will want him to statr right away, especially after seeing what Cutler, Leinart, and Young did last year. But I don't think Russell will be in those players league as a rookie, and I think he will be a flop if put in that jkind of situation. He is much better suited for a Detroit team that has a superb Offensive coordinator in Mike Martz, and a solid veteran QB in Jon Kitna, who can play in front of him for a couple of years and buy him time to develop.

Not for the Raiders but they arent going to pick him so it doesnt matter. I understand your question but if a player really sucks (ex like Ryan Leaf) the team can just cut him and take a salary cap hit the next year.... and not of the entire owed money. Even "guaranteed" money really isnt because you can get cut. It is ridiculous - I think teams are going to start making a lot of the signings for top draft picks has lots of incentives. Mario Williams got up to $8 million in incentives. But the way the salary cap keeps increasing it could end up being a good deal signing a Calvin Johnson (the Raiders will) for a 6 year $60 million contract. In 5 years a top wide could earn more than 10 million a year. Thats why each team has so many scouts because they are making a huge investment in them.
Also dont pick a best answer until after the draft and you will see that I was right and the Raiders didnt pick Russel

"deserve"?....no
but Christopher and IceQueen make good points. although technically, the raiders and lions could build into better teams after about 5 years. (it's gotta start somewhere). but it won't start w/ the lions until millen leaves.
but no player "deserves" that kind of pay w/ NO demonstration of proficiency in the NFL. by giving into this concept and paying this much, we only perpetuate the overly inflated salaries of NFL players and compound the problem of them getting paid gross amounts while hopelessly injured. the cycle only gets worse.
it's a catch 22. if Russell wants to play, a team like the Raiders is a good place to go, because they suck. but then again....you'll play for a team that sucks. frankly, if i were a draftee, i would be wise and want to go to a team where i could be a backup and learn from a veteran for a year or two and then really dominate the league when my number got called to step up.
good points though.

No i dont believe he deserve that in the sugar bowl wich basically because of that game he will go first all he showed me is that he can throw it a mile and the recievers can run under it. He will probaly get that kind of money anyways but i think proven vets are the only ones who should get that much.

Absolutely not. If the Raiders draft Russell #1, it will be incontrovertible proof that Al Davis is senile.

he will get alot more than that. Mario Williams the top draft pick last year got 52 million plus a signing bonus. The money is insane, I agree.

No one is worth $30 million. But then again, he's got to look at Al Davis everyday.

I hope he asks for something that high and gets it. Anyone drafted by Oakland or Detroit for the time being might as well realize their career is probably over the way those two clubs are run lately.
