Would it be appropriate to call my superior after an absence due to illness. He was to have called.?

A professor in education absent due to mental illness. Return has been approved by doctor(s). He was to have called but I have not heard from him for a considerable period. (Three weeks).
His call was to centre on return arrangements. I am uncertain and concerned.

Call him, and ask him how he is doing? And ask him if there is a date on which he might be returning to work. Nothing wrong with that.
