I am an American working in an American "business" in Germany. I have the opportunity here to hear and see other perspectives of us Americans. I have the opportunity to hear "news programs" from other countries. You just wouldn't believe how different their perspectives are. (And no, I don't believe every word I hear.)

My point is this.... Many countries have a view of us from the actions of the well-known people in our country such as politicians and celebrities.

I wonder if "they" have any clue as to who the people of the U.S.A. really are. We're just regular ordinary people, just like the regular ordinary people of their respective countries.

So while talking to a German the other day...after listening to his perspective of the American "people"...I had the opportunity to express to him that not everyone is corrupt, promiscuous, pro-war, etc. etc.

What would you tell a person from another country, about the "real" people of the U.S.A.?

Just for the record, I have a strong German descent and that is one of the reasons I wanted to come here. I am in no way "judging" the Germans. I have a great respect for my German ancestors.

I think people who stereotype like this are just idiots. I'm German and I don't think like this about Americans. Same is with the stereotypes I hear about Germans, they are always wrong. I mean really... I sometimes hear how other Germans complain that they would still be judged because of the Nazis and that it's not fair and then they themselves start to judge Americans by their government, that is quite silly.

I wouldn't tell them anything. Why the hell would I want to talk to someone who judges me on what Tom Cruise and George Bush does? I don't judge Germans on Hitler or, as has been pointed out, Hasselhoff. If they want to judge me, an average ordinary American, based on some corrupt politician or some idiot actor, then **** 'em.

unfortunately what we see of America is your red neck president and insular comments that get made by your press and media plus America's foreign policy does it no favours when it comes to how the rest of the world view it,having said that, the American people Ive met here in Australia Ive found to be really nice and happy to have a laugh and quite interested in what our country has to offer,so for me i like the people just not your government of the day

Don't knock it until you've tried it.

Seriously, I'd say that until you visit the U.S. and meet average people there, shut up. After all, I don't judge Germans for their outright worship of David Hasselhoff.

Best advice you can give any xenophobe, really.

Hope this helps!
