This noise is like a ticking noise that only lasts for a minute or so and goes away once the car warms up. Feels like its towards the front right side. Engine also feels rough (almost like a diesel) while driving the the first couple of miles. Once the temperature reaches optimum the roughness goes away. This is a 1999 Camry LE 4 cylinder 2.2L engine. No fluid or overheating problems. Any ideas? How do I know if its timing belt, flat belt, valve train, cylinder or something else altogether. Has anybody got this problem fixed recently? I want to go to the dealer with some background info.

Gear changes are actually smooth. I dont think its the transmission. Since all this roughness occurs when the car is in PARK. Sounds like lack of lubrication but where?

Is this a SOHC? and what type of oil do you use?and something you might want to try is before you spend any money..on repairs...I suggest adding BG quick clean to your oil, why added it helps break down any blockage in oil delivery and might just help..Then again you might need to go to a high mileage oil, which is thicker than 5 or 10w30....If you have never changed the t/belt it is recommended every 70k miles...

If your car runs rough during first few minutes of operation, it's most likely something about the fluid. Like example, when you drive your car right when you start it, and the gear changes are really rough, then you either have bad transmission fluid or your tranny is just worn/contaminated.

your best bet is to take it to the dealership and they will run a diagnostics check
