How can I escape having to return phone calls at home? I turn my answering machine off but I still have caller i.d. The telephone is such a huge waste of my time....it interrupts whatever I'm concentrating on. The older I get, the more I despise this freakin' phone. One of my kids has a new friend in the neighborhood, the friend's Mom calls me psychotically over silly things (i.e. i have some clothes that might fit your kids, etc.). I feel obligated to call her back but she wants to talk forever!! I hate, hate, hate calling people back! Any advice? Anyone else feel this way?

I have a husband and three sons...this woman has a travelling husband, a newborn baby and two boys who would practically live with my family if they could!

I've already set so many limits with this woman...the phone is just another one to add to the list.

Her boys used to come over to play or invite my sons to play EVERY, SINGLE DAY...I put a stop to this rudeness. The Mom would pull in my driveway and wait while her kids ring my bell...begging to have my kids play, etc.

On several occassions, when I'm home and don't answer, she'll drive over to my house anyway.

I made the mistake of giving her my cell number because her Son was on a family outing with my Son. Now she takes it upon herself to call my cell phone...not just a time or two either! She'll call at least 10 times in one day...even after she leaves a message. She doesn't give a person a chance to call her back.

Thank you so much for all your input...all of you are awesome and so helpful!!

I do..I thought it is because I have a full schedule and I feel as if I have to spend my free time returning calls I have a guge family who is close, resulting in havinf to retuen calls. I have friends who call too...I have 3 kids It never ends. You are not alone. Try not to get involved or give out your phone number to people who like to talk or ramble on alot on the phone. Tell the lady who calls you that you dont have time to stay on the phone because you are quite busy after you get home. If she is a good person, she will understand and not call as much. Dont answer to messages until YOU feel like it This is your life and your time. Do it your way...I hate the phone too I always have LOL...Better yet...tell her you prefer emails

For years I hated using telephones period. I hate when they ring and disturb me. I hate when people leave messages < I never listen to them and just delete them>
I hate when they leave it ring and ring until the answering machine kicks in, then they hang up......so it really took them five rings to decide this.
The best thing for me was when the internet began .. dial - up, but these days I'm back to square one, I have DSL.

If it were me, I would not even call her back because that is just crap that would not interest me < I'd buy the clothes if my children needed them and i'm not the salvation Army>

If she is using the clothes as a ploy to get ya on the phone so she has a new phone buddy, well she may get bummed by not calling and get the hint it ain't happening.

She may come over with the clothes and that is the time to tell her face to face you don't need the clothes, if you take them you imply you are her new phone buddy / friend.

Have the phone company change your phone to a one way out phone only, whereby no one can call you. Get a cell phone that people, like your kids, or certain close friends know the number of. Dare anyone to give out your number.

you have caller id, screen your call and if you feel the call is not important enought to return then don't, I feel the same way hate returning calls so I don't answer my phone or i turn the ringer off if the caller has something very important to say then he will leave a message or call back.

Yeah I agree, I talk on the phone all frickin day @ work. When I leave there I just want some peace & quiet. I have no good advice except don't call em back unless you really want to.

If you don't want to return calls and you don't want to get rid of the phone, the simplest solution is to change the number and don't give it to anyone - including your children. Get them a children's line and make them responsible for returning their own calls.

If someone has to get in touch with you in an emergency, they can call the children's line and you can always listen to the messages but you don't have to return them.

Also turn off the caller ID, if that's what's making you feel obligated to return calls.

Well.. I know how you feel! I also HATE returning calls! I normally don't return calls unless its one of my closest friends!! My theory is if someone wants to talk to you they can phone and if you don't answer.. they must try again later cause its their problem.. not yours! Don't worry.. my friends now understand that with me!!
