My psychology instructor gave us an extra credit assignment. I would have to violate a social norm. The problem is that I don't like attention from strangers and I pretty much keep to my self in public places. I do, however, work in an elementary school and have a daughter and niece that I would feel comfortable enough to do something silly in front of.

Mightn't the challenge for you to go outside your comfort zone be part of the exercise?

I'm not suggesting you do anything horrid or outrageous -just unexpected.

What about something like standing up for a young man on a crowded tube/train/bus?

Offering to help with a heavy case (again a young fit person).

Asking one of the people distributing free newspapers/leaflets etc if you could help them out by distributing alongside them.....

Good luck! Hopefully you'll learn something about yourself as well as others.

Walk into the classroom and remove Your clothing one item at a time and see how long it takes for You to get a reaction from Your Instructor and Your fellow students. The smart money says that You will create enough of a disturbance to obtain Your credit. Think about it. How far would Your instructor let You go before He/She had to justify Their instruction to violate a social norm? Time to have fun with someone's head. They can not let You "strip" but They can not stop You from doing something so aberrant. Either way You get Your credits.

PS Wear LOTS of clothing.

We had to do this in my social psych class. However, men had to do something characteristically female (like coo at a baby or something), while females had to do something characteristically male (like spit while someone is around.) I really can't remember what I did. I am sure I made something up, though. As I do not like drawing attention to myself either. I'd suggest doing something in front of someone you are more comfortable with (a boyfriend,a a friend, a sibling.) Maybe go on a walk and hock a loogey or start cursing like a sailor. If you are of age, buy a cigar and pretend like you are smoking it. They would still have similar reactions as to the public, I'd think.

And just to add, a really easy response would be that "everyone sort of stared at me, but seemed a little hesitant to bring it up, etc."

Ask someone what their salary is, even your professor. Talking about money is usually forbidden in society. Or, go out to brunch with "bed-head" -- don't comb your hair before you go out.

Only put make-up on one eye or one lip, or only paint half your fingernails (or less) and see if anybody comments
