Ten days isn't enough time, but you'll definitely have to enter from Northern California (maybe Lake Tahoe) and drive down Pacific Coastal Highway 1 to get to LA. Hit the Grand Canyon & former Highway 666 (the four-corners area) on your way back.
UPDATE: I also agree with next poster -- the directions he gives outline the same trip I took in 1999, but you need much more time. I spent a month on that trip.

Anything along the old Mother Road... Route 66.
Williams, AZ is a funky town to stay in near the Grand Canyon. They have a great festive night life all week long.
You could always go from there to the Grand Canyon then make way to Vegas. Or follow Route 66 till it ends at the Santa Monica Pier.
Be sure to eat at Gladstone's 4 Fish in Pacific Palisades! Yummy wonderful food while over looking the ocean!
Can I come?!?! :)
Have a great trip!

I personally didn't think much about Vegas, but it might be fun for you guys. chicago is a must!! if you like good house music check out Smartbar or Zentra. the area near division ave. is pretty cool, fun place to walk around (i prefer it over D.T.) unless you want to window shop on michigan ave. should stop at boulder, much more chill than DT denver, BIG BIG college party town, lots of fun shops, fun to walk around. Vail is a fun stop as well. If you snowboard, you might be able to do a last run~ i believe they are open until end of april/may.. i was there a week a go and people were still snowboarding (only if i knew..) MOAB, UT is a cool place to go as well... if you don't mind hiking. Mt. zion was awsome as well.
have fun on your road trip!
