Because people are basically stupid and shallow. Sad but true.

It is a shame that those you work with only appear to be treating you better now you have lost some weight. Do you think it might be because you are feeling better about yourself and this is reflecting on those others?
Those who think overweight people are lazy or don't watch what they eat have obviously been lucky enough to never have to watch their weight. It has been shown that most overweight people have a gene which encourages their body to hold on to all food and convert it to fat to help in the "lean years". This is a survival gene which developed many many eons ago. Most overweight people don't choose to be this way. They fight it all their lives. Unfortunately we have to eat to live, it is not like giving up smoking or drinking for an alcoholic, and whilst we might choose the wrong food at times, so does the skinny person next to you. I bet they don't only eat healthy non fattening food. A case in point is a young man who when I first met him only ever ate McDonald's burgers and fries. He is not particularly active but doesn't have an ounce of fat on him. He has a body that burns it up no matter what he eats. It is not what you eat but how your body metabolises it.
Unfortunately as previously stated, someone in society at one time decided that ultra thin was the way it should be and so we have been brainwashed into believing it to be true and therefore if you are not thin then there must be something wrong with you. Whilst there may be health problems associated with being overweight the same goes for the very thin. But I have known overweight people to be better workers all round than some of their thinner counterparts. There is a prejudice against the overweight just like the prejudice against a person's skin colour or race. If you are overweight then that is the prejudice you see.

The question that you pose is complex... and it seems to be a few different questions.... do you really think that people hate fat people in general? My personal experience would tend to disagree with you there. Although children can be VERY cruel, in real life, I do not see a lot of genuine discrimination against fat people. I see them advancing rather far and high in the workplace, for example. But if you are asking about questions of personal aesthetics... why we prefer thin mates, why we perceive thin as being more aesthetic... well... that is largely an American thing. Other cultures surely have more liberal preferences regarding personal appearance. I myself distinguish between certain "large" individuals who carry themselves well, and are clearly comfortable and healthy, and others who simply do not seem to fit their own size properly for themselves, and seem themselves to be genuinely uncomfortable. It is a kind of sensitivity to the individual's own personality, charisma, and frame. I do not feel like I am expressing myself very eloquently, it is 3AM as I type, hopefully, the idea becomes clear to the reader...

It's their ignorance! It's also society brainwashing through magazines,t.v.,music etc. I personally go out of my way to treat overweight people nice! I was 302pounds and now I am 107pounds I remember the treatment I got being fat. People do instantly treat you better and begin to acknowledge you. Even the people you thought were your friends when you were fat. It's sad very sad.
Keep up the GOOD work!!

It may be a cultural thing. In Europe, in the 1700s- extra weight was a sign of wealth...heavier people could obviously afford more food. But in our current health, appearance obsessed World of today- being overweight is frowned upon because it implies an inabilty to control ones eating habits. It certainly ISN'T fair to alot of people...-but such are the times we live in. :(

We as a society are constantly bombarded with advertisements which tell us that thin is good and fat is bad. The idea that over-weight people have no self-control nor self-discipline is perpetuated by the media, movies, and pop-culture. Even the medical community treats it as a shameful thing, despite good intentions.

I don't dislike heavy people, but I honestly have prejudice that they don't really care about themselves, and I know that couldn't always be the case, but it seems like they'd be a downer, like if they had a handicap.
