Overthinking does make us hate ourselves, worry more and probably develop anxiety or some neurosis. Are we here because we think we are. What if we stopped thinking meditiation and yoga make us concentrate on a breathing and thinking about nothing. We should practice thinking about thinking and just enjoying the moment.
Sometimes my thoughts scare me in that I am thinking of things I am afraid of. There is nothing to fear but fear itself so I should stop thinking too much.

Many times we create worry even when nothing is going on. This could make someone really ill physically and mentally. God doesnt want us to worry and sometimes its not that easy to cease doing it. Our minds are full of energy, and if someone is not grounded in positivity than it will take a negative state. If you think negative thoughts about yourself or what others perceive you as, your mind is controlling you. There is too much evil in this world, and our brains can pick up signals from ulgly people. If you are sensitive and your brain picks up negative vibes, there is truth to it. What this means is that you must avoid all negative situations, if you simply cannot avoid negative situations than allow your brain to think about your truth. Ground yourself with good thoughts. This may sound stupid, but fear anxiety and negativity can create ulcers and mental health issues. Free yourself by knowing that God will be your rock. Fear is fake, its a perceived learned unrealiztic approach to dealing with an issue or situation. We as human beings have only God to fear. Everything else is a figment of out imaginations. Its not hard to stop thinking negative thoughts, one must simply change their thinking pattern. Like you said the more you fear something the more you think about it and the worst it will be. If your afraid to eat in front of people because you think they are looking at you, you should instantly calm yourself and realize that they are only human too. They arnt staring at you and this is just a fear that in turn gives birth to anxiety. Its best to know yourself and your weaknesses. Begin to relax yourself by seeing the reality and not the imagined exxagerated version of things.

You seem to have your own answer already, but I am going to try and answer your question anyway.
So, why are we afraid of our thoughts?
The simplest answer is that we are complex beings, and much of our thoughts are substrata, coming from our unconscious, and even more primal parts of ourselves.
The little piece of who we are that we consider 'we' doesn't always agree with these thoughts, which can often push you in the direction of doing things you know might be self-destructive, or hurt those we love.
Prime example: Infidelity.
The conscious 'we' that you refer to does not want to betray a trust, or hurt a loved one, however, the URGE to do so is often strong. In far too many cases, too strong to resist. That is a thought to fear. (SOURCE: Watch Cheaters)
Most of us, on occasion, have 'thoughts' of violence, directed at strangers, loved ones, and ourselves. (SOURCE: Spousal abuse statistics, child abuse statistics, sucide statistics etc.) Thus people who just 'act' and don't 'think' are often that same creepy uncle that touched your cousin Jenny. These people scare me.
The sad truth however, is that in our modern culture, young people have been taught that their own satisfaction is the greatest good, no thought required. Thus we have Virginia Tech, Colombine, and the weekly tale of teens killing 'just because they want to know how it feels'. SOURCE: Statistics refering to the abuse, beating, and setting on fire of homeless people.
Is that reason enough to be afraid of our thoughts?

I have to be pretty naive and imbecile to be afraid of my own thoughts. Ideas and thoughts are neverending, more so, eternal.
We can't hypothetically stop our mind from thinking what it wants to think. It is dependent on us on how we try to react upon them.

Some people fail to recognize that we have control over our thoughts.
Thoughts are like a TV program. If what is there doesn't suit you, change the channel to something that you will enjoy more.

Somewhere in that question, I sense someone who is afraid of what she is inside. She is probably a nice person on the outside, but there is something inside her like a horrible violent beast that demands release.
If you are that person, I like you already. :-)

People aren't afraid of their thoughts, they're afraid of their negative emotions. So what are you rambling about?
