They are drying out, dehydrating. Because ice is just frozen water, and the freezers are mostly now frost free, the freezer is trying to continuously remove moisture. That's why old ice cubes shrink!

Generally ice cubes become larger due to the expansion of the freezing process of water. They will become smaller due to the state-of-the-art refrigerators which compensate for solidification of water and allow for dis compensation of H20 known as "frost free". This removes the excess molecules of expansion and makes the frozen ice to decrease in density.
