I don't want to sound mean....but if bums where to sell certain of their organs, like one of their kidneys, they could get like a grand or more for a new start. So if you ask me they should sell at least one organ. Am I right ladies and gentlemen?!

Poverty is such a gigantic problem, it's not even funny, but the solution can never be carried out other than continuously getting those who have capital to give it. Henry Ford owned the means to create the most technologically advanced things on the planet and he thought of couse he could end warfare and sooner or lator was making vehicles to be used in wars. Try to get to that level where you can give, then you give, not having children for that would contribute to the number of open mouths to feed, perhaps there is a way of giving money directly to a person in africa through the mail yet who, I keep asking myself when I have more money than I need. Democrats are for the poor, vote democrat or Ralph Nader even more wohoo

1. USA needs to stop getting involved in other countries bussiness. Like declaring war to a country because they are doing something to another country other than USA. Use the money that they are using to send soldiers to war to feed the people in USA dying of hunger, homeless, disabled people and help USA's progress. Bring the soldiers back and stop this nonsense.
2. Eliminate taxes in food in Puerto Rico, so people don't have to pay 9 dollars for a three pound of rice at the corner store, while in USA we pay 2 dollars for the same bag of rice.
Change Puerto Rico's law about minimum wage, let the employers know that they are supposed to give a raise to people that works for more than three months and then after that they are supposed to raise again every year. Not pay 5 dollars per hour for three years of service like they do.
3. Use the taxes on cigarettes and alcohol to help countries in need like Africa, after all we used them as slaves, thanks to them this country has rail roads and everyone is " free". Their sweat and blood is mixed with the ground we step on.
4. Stop using this country's money to have the first lady and the president get a manicure or a hair cut, let them use their pay checks. Or better, do not pay the president's wife unless she is really working in an office everyday, not traveling with luxury with her dogs, and having luncheons or dinners with her friends.
5. The money raised to help other countries an ourselves when there is a hurricane, tornado or earthquake; use it for that purpose only nothing else. Don't use it to pay the guy that brought the food in his truck or to make a cute statue for the person that helped the most.

Um... humans can live up to their title as the most rational beings and take responsibility for themselves?
Explanation? Sure.
Recently I rescued a sick pigeon (feral... he couldn't fly). While researching pigeons, I discovered why they always tell you not to feed urban wildlife (pigeons, squirrels, etc...)... apparently, when there isn't food and resources available, they don't breed. Thus the population doesn't increase (of course, I love squirrels, pigeons, rats, etc... so I've now made it a practice to feed them more - until they can overthrow humans). This is so intelligent. They can't take care of their offspring, so they don't have offspring! Genius! Seriously. That's REALLY brilliant. And they're just "stupid" animals.
Now... enter humans. We're smart. We're rational. People in 3rd World countries are no different. They may not be educated, but that have the same basic reasoning abilities as every other human. It shouldn't be tough to figure out "gee! I'm poor and starving, as is everyone around me, and I live in an improverished hell! I shouldn't have kids and subject another being to these atrocities!" But not... they have kids. They have lots of kids. And guess what? Their kids are poor, starving, diseased, etc... Just like their parents. No chance to rise out of it. They;re stuck. And the cycle continues!
They (the adults, that is... not the kids) should be held accountable for their own suffering. It's their fault. They're perpetuating it. When a diseased, starving, impoverished homeless person in a civilized country has a child, that child is taken away by Child Protection and the parents are deemed guilty of abuse. So... why should it be different for people in 3rd World countries? They aren't stupid. Their selfishness is what's causing suffering, wasting resources, etc... Missionaries/support, in addition to giving them needed supplies, should also be lecturing and, frankly, yelling at them for being so irresponsible and cruel to their children. They should be given birth control... not food (well, food, too... but with an emphasis on birth control so this doesn't continue).
Seriously... I know that sounds cruel and I'll get crap for it, but really... They're human. They're smart enough to know better. This a blatant case of irresponsibility and selfishness, and they need to stop being treated like the victim. I assure you, if a couple in a similar situation in the US or England or wherever had 6 children, they'd be arrested for child abuse and have their children taken away from them.
And once that's taken care of, we can use the money and resources to help with other things and solve the very social problems that lead to mass poverty, etc... (but as of now, even if we solved that diplomatic aspect of it, it would still be rampant)

Don't you think that the United States federal government could take the money they have spent on the war in Iraq http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/11880954/ (This article is from March 2006) and put it towards solving problems like poverty and starvation? I think that poverty throughout the world is a huge problem and a show like American Idol does not solve these problems. It is more of a marketing scheme to keep us numb on our couches with fuzzy feelings in our heads instead of creating positive change in our society so we can help other people throughout the world.

I believe poverty is a problem that we ourselves can never solve. The bible indicates that during the tribulation there will be famines widespread throughout the world. We are in the end times so I guess the poverty scenario serves as one of the signs to the second coming of Jesus Christ our savior. Don't worry about it, it is something which must come to pass.
Besides, somebody (a celebrity) has asked this question already.

Three features of this question never fail to amaze me. First, it is always posed to others. Second, the underlying tone suggests that the person asking the question really don't know the answer. And, third, if someone told them them would immediately implement the suggestions. Climbing out of poverty is not-cannot-be a matter of charity. People have to want to climb out strongly enough to work hard at it. The Protestant virtues are still valid and still constitute the basis for individual prosperity. 'Poor people' is sufficiently vague to create the image of a collective desire to end poverty. But, it also disguises what all averages do-lack of enterprise and ability to exploit opportunity. Cheerful sentiments (lessen someones burden, brighten someones day) are unhelpful and sentimental. The grind, the routine, and the sheer exhaustion of hard work is what everyone needs.

I enjoyed watching Idol tonight. It was very sad, yet at the same time gives a person hope. There are people out there willing to give and sacrifice themselves in order to help those in need.
If only more people would be willing to help.
Like you said 10 dollars goes a long way.

Poverty will NEVER be wiped out or demolished. There will always be poor people, no matter what you do, or how much you give.
