Your question makes PERFECT sense, and you have hit the nail on the head!
My partner and I have an ongoing joke between us. Either we are the straightest gay couple we know, or we are the most lesbian-like gay men this world has ever seen.
Neither one of us is "flamboyent," yet neither one of us is "uber-butch" either. And neither one of us can go a day without thinking, "you know, dear....the hardware store has a really good deal on chop saws right now."
No two gay couples are alike, just like no two straight couples are alike. A gay couple (friends of ours) that we know just HATE children and think they should all be locked away until they are 18. But my partner and I would love to adopt a child.
It's just different strokes for different folks.
There is no real "lifestyle"........just LIFE.

I have been asking this for quite some time now and no one has been able to answer me either. At least not with any amount of sincerity or credibility.
My "lifestyle" is that of a parent, a partner, a business owner, a community volunteer, a volunteer for my son's school...I still haven't figured out why the haters insist I have some phantom "gay lifestyle" as if I drive a gay car or live in a gay house.
Being gay isn't even a "way of life" as the previous poster said. It's simply a part of what makes my who I am. Yes, it determines my orientation for whom I am attracted, but my life doesn't revolve around it.

I think,
The gay life style isn’t as overt as people expect it to be. It’s not as if we all wear the same shirt, and all eat skittles at 5:03pm every Thursday. But there are many experiences that every gay person has. Growing up it’s the whole process of finding out your gay, then letting other people find out. As an adult is trying to form relation ship in a world where if you flirt with the wrong person you could get the **** kicked out of you. Then there are subtle things. No gay person would ask his friend “So are you the man or the woman?” These commonalities are the “gay life style.”

The word is a put down to negate the reality of homosexuality and try and promote the idea that there is a choice.
Unfortunately I see it creeping into our own LGBT lexicon and that's dangerous because we then start using their own words against each other without thinking.
I see you managed to link promescuity with lifestyle which means you see lifestyle meaning only how someone behaves...that's behavior, not lifestyle.

It's referred to as a lifestyle simply because it links some behaviors that are considered hedonistic with the entire population of gay people. The term is a political one that is used to provoke negative feelings for the entire gay community.
(And there is a gay community, made up of a variety of personal habits.)

People like to categorize and label. A "gay" lifestyle is often used in a derogatory sense, but is no more accurate than describing someone as having a "straight" one. Everyone is different and I think it's a demeaning phrase.

Because media portrays such a lifestyle. Check out Queer as Folk, that show set us back 100 years.

Your question makes a lot of sense. Also, I hope to never again hear the word "community".

Luke 13:19
It is like a mustard seed, which a man took and planted in his garden. It grew and became a tree, and the birds of the air perched in its branches."

Well, I don't think that it is fare to classify a group of people by there sexual orientation. I know a lot of straight people and some of them are sluts, others are prudes, still others are well balanced.
