1. proper sun lite, not to much not to little. best to keep the lite on and off at the same time every day.
2. right amount of water.
3. right amount of space in the pot for the roots to grow. The roots should not be exposed to air, you don't want the roots growing out of the pot.
4. make sure that the room temp. is not to cold. keep the room temp over 67 but lower then 80. also do not let the room temp go up and down more then 5deg. Fer.

also if you have a pet make sure it is not peeing on it.

probably from stem rot from not letting them dry out inbetween waterings. if the soil stays wet around the stems of new plants the stem will rot where it meets the ground. also try putting a small fan on them for a few hours per day and it will strenghten the stems by making the plants sway back and forth (simulating natural wind action).

OR, they could be too wet. If they're too wet and warm, fungus can attack the plant right at the soil level or just below and the plant's stem rots through (or gets clogged up with fungus-ness) and the plant falls over and dies.

I think it's called "damping off."

They should be out doors during the day in sunlight and have enough water in the pots until the frost danger is over..
