Inmates and pre-trial detainees are allowed to read most everything as long as it doesn't pose a security threat to the Jail or Institution. And yes there are limits on what can be read as the books received MUST come directly from the publisher themselves. Any Publisher sending magazines, books, or literature not approved by the facility prior to mailing them will not be delivered to the Inmate or Detainee.
GOD BLESS/GOOD LUCK!!

I guess it would depend. I doubt it's much of a concern.
A book like "How to escape from prison for dummies" might be cause for concern.
But if a guy wants to read a book about the history of the Mafia in North America, I doubt the authorities care.
In high security facilities, there would probably be a prison library provided and as such, material would be selected by those in charge.
But for people incarcerated in minimum/medium securitiy facilities, inmates are often allowed to order items for themselves if they have the money or have family members do it. Aside from obviously prohibited items, I doubt that the authorities would care too much.
Unless it is "How to escape from prison for Dummies" it's probably ok. I can't see why they would throw a fit over an inmate ordering a book like "The history of the Mafia In America" or such a book like it.
This is probably varied, it would be the institutions rules. There's no national list of approved and prohibited literature for prisoners.
Most prisons would be happy to have their inmates reading, regardless of the subject matter.

I'm not really sure if inmates can read crime books. If your under the impression that they shouldn't, then ignorance ought to be pain-full. If it is thought that Nancy drew or even the O.J.. coverage is a trigger for some deranged hatchet freak still in the closet, then you are the one who takes the books to seriously. If an inmate would happen to enjoy the healthy habit of reading then why would you want to censor a book. but I suppose, since they dont have cable, and murder is never on t.v. society should be safe huh?

It depends, it's different from state to state, from federal to federal, and from jail to jail. When I was in, you could read virtually anything, less jail breaks, riots, weapons making, etc. Most books and magazines are screened before being allowed to receive.

Every jail or prison has its own rules. Some are pretty liberal with what you can read, and other are severely restricted.

They have more than what they can digest to entertain themselves but may not be on the lines you have suggested!
