- Tokyo - 8,646,520
- Mexico City - 9,377,300

2nd Source: WIKIPEDIA
- New York - 8,143,198
- Tokyo - 12,570,000
- Mexico City - 8,720,916

3rd Source: OFFICIAL SITES
- New York - 8,008,278
- Tokyo - 12,544,000
- Mexico City - 8,720,916

It shows different figures because it was recorded in different years. For example, Wikipedia's info was recorded since 2005 and my atlas was 2000. As we all know, population may grow or decline every little second.

Another reason why different sources show different figures for the same location is that some population figures are for metropolitan areas, while some are for the city only.

That is why one source will show the 2005 population of New York as 8,143,19719 million, and one as 18,813,723.

The city itself has about 8 million, but the census' view of the New York Metropolitan Area contains an additional 10.5 million residents of smaller suburban areas.

Tokyo and Mexico City would have similar situations. The entire Metropolitan Area of Tokyo has been estimated at over 30 million people. While the prefecture of Tokyo contains about 12.5 million people, and a special 23-ward area contains 8.457 million people.

Mexico City or the Federal District is similar to Washington DC. It is the capital city, a separate "state", and contains about 8,720,916 million people. However, the Greater Mexico City area covers "58 municipalities of the State of Mexico and 1 municipality of the state of Hidalgo" with a total of 19.2 million people, according to wikipedia.

Your best bet is the US or countries Census Bureau

New York 19, 306, 186 (2006 Census)

Or visit the City's tourism site or the local Chamber of Commerce.

Most stats differ depending on the year that the data was acquired. Most Census are already a year old. The City's tourism site usually is only 6 months old.

The main reason why the figures are different is that people are constantly dying and babies are constantly being born. In between birth and death, people move around. The U.S. Census is only done once every 10 years, so you have to guess at how many people are in one spot between the last census and the next.
