There is a way to know if you believe the Bible.
And no, you don't go straight to heaven or hell.
The Bible says that the dead are in a deep sleep. (That's in Ecclesiastes 9) There are many other verses that refer to death as a deep sleep. Email me if you want them.
So anyway, everyone who dies, "sleeps" until Jesus' second coming. Then, like the Bible says, "the dead in Christ shall rise first", and then the rest of the Christians that are still alive on the earth are called up to meet them in the air. That's "the Resurrection" where the righteous are judged. To keep this short, the 1,000 year reign of Christ follows. After that, the rest of the dead are risen and judged... you know what happens then.
If you believe the Bible, then read it more. No, actually STUDY it more. Don't listen too much to what people say. Most of it is opinion. Look for it yourself in God's Word.

There are as many answers as their are people who will say theirs is the absolute truth. Therefor, here are several honest and true in giving the answer.
Roman Catholic: your soul can go to heaven, purgatory, or Hell.
Protestants: Your soul can go to Heaven or Hell.
Hebrew; Your soul goes to Sheol where you await the End of Time.
Muslim: You go to Paradise or Hell.
Asian & many Pagans: You rest and remember the knowledge and wisdom accrued in past lives until you are again reincarnated.
Atheist: Most believe you aren't any more.
Asatru: If you are true and valient you might go to vahallha
There are many more, but this may give you something to hold onto.
If you want the Truth.....Ask a Pagan.

No one knows for sure.
Every person that has an opinion
will have a different one, because
of their religion, or lack of it. It's a
very complicated question.
I believe, your spirit leaves your body,
the minute you die. If you have done well,
in this life and learned, all you were suppose
to learn, you will move on, to the next phase
of your enlightenment. You will be in a place,
that some call heaven, with your family, friends
and other acquaintances, awaiting your new life.
No one knows for sure. It's all about faith.

I'm with Kat on that one. I was born and raised Catholic myself and had the same doubts on the religion and afterlife. Who goes to heaven or hell and who's stuck in purgutory waiting for an answere to go up or down. All I really know is that I don't want to be reincarnated as a cockroach.

When you die......
You get to do anything you want...
Think of the movie "What Dreams May Come" and I honestly feel it's similar to that.
All i know is, i had a full conversation with my dead grandfather, the day of his burial. He was happy, radiant and he told me that he was young again. He looked fantastic, i could hardly recognize him because i am used to seeing him looking really old. He then left, but i knew life went on after that point. I then called a few people, just in case i was dreaming and i wasn't. It really happened. I am about as normal as they come. Mom of 5, raised Christian. Now Metaphysical.

Everyone believes something different.
I personally believe that there is life after death but exactly what I am unsure.
Maybe we get stuck here and this is Hell. Maybe if we go towards the light we will found our heaven.
Maybe we get reincarnated.
I do believe though that no matter what your spirit lives on.

I think a more important question is... where did we come from?
It's kind of hard to predict the future. But we are surrounded with clues about the past. The more you know about who you really are, the less you will feel the need to be concerned about your future. Find out who you are, that's where the answer is.

If you believe in Jesus Christ as your personal Savior and believe that He died for your sins on the cross, then you will go to heaven. There is no way for you to earn your way to heaven, it is only by God's grace. We can't understand heaven, but from what the Bible says, we know that it is for eternity. We will be glorifying Jesus forever! If you have questions, email me. lsimpy@yahoo.com

No one really knows. So the answer varies on what type of person you are and your beliefs.
