There are many species of doves, and the common pigeon is one of them. It's actual name is rock dove or rock pigeon. Originally a cliff dweller, it adapts well to buildings.
I have a dove that is half rock pigeon and half ring-neck dove; a hybrid between two species that happened in my aviary.

Both pigeons and doves are noisy, but the pigeons are noisier than the doves. While the pigeon has a larger and rounded tail, the dove has a small, pointed tail.

then you have the mourning doves named for their mournfull coos. they are the grey ones that we see in the wild most of the time
then there are the domesticated white doves...all in the same family...
