What a great question.
Do we get complacent in our relationships? Take our partner for granted? Yes.... for sure. But, im not sure that challanging it just for the sake of mixing things up is such a good idea.
I think it's best to just appreciate the one you are with....and not take them for granted.

It provides personal growth but requires a leap of faith. Some people are too comfortable in their ruts to leave.

Not all the time if it causes extreme distress and disharmony- that is no way to live, it is a fear threshold, especially if you suffer from clinical depression, or are prone to anxiety attacks.
