Ordinarily, when an egg and a sperm are joined at conception, a single cell is created with a total of 46 chromosomes. With trisomy/monosomy an error occurs in chromosomal separation, which results in the formation of a second cell grouping with an extra chromosome (trisomy), or with one less chromosome (monosomy). usually chromosomes are in pairs, as I'm sure u know.
