The runt can often be a misnomer- frequently a puppy is born that is smaller than its sibs simply because it got a less than great berth in the uterus. It may be quite vigorous and eat well and in fact catch up to its sibs by weaning. I can name two dogs born half the size of there littermates and Lester (there was less of him) at maturity is larger than half his sibs and put it this way in the athletic dog sports in my area, most of us tremble to meet the Micro Force .....
Now there IS what I call the true runt: a dog born normal size but who's growth is held back by cronic health problems or malnutrition. Biggest clue the head is oversize compared to the body for a dog of their breed.
My advice is, since its wise to get a new pup exam within a day or two of bringing pup home- get the physical. If hes healthy you are clear, if hes not you may be able to deal with it before it affects his growth .....

Where did you get the pup? Call and ask. Usually the runt is just the smallest in the litter, it doesn't necessarily mean it is weak or sickly.

i just got 2 puppies about 2 months ago, they are brothers, and one is the runt, he plays like a perfectly normal happy puppy and he is actually healthier than his brother, and he eats good too, i prefer the runts (haha)
