I will usually lay on my back, and put my feet up on the wall so they are elavated for a few minutes, that relaxes me. If that don't work then I write down everything that I have on my mind that needs to get done that next day on a piece of paper, that way I say to myself, it's on paper, I will worry about it tomarrow. Then if that don't help, I take out the tylenol PM.

Sometimes when the lights are out and there is no noise...that is the worst thing.
If you have a TV in your bedroom, turn it on and watch something interesting. It will keep your mind on the show and you will eventually fall asleep...
Good luck

Drink some green tea and give yourself a manicure/pedicure. There's no point in laying down doing nothing, might as well work on your grooming! It allows you to focus on something else. Try to listen to a specific sound around you if you can. Like the air conditioner, try to focus soley on that.

I have a TV in my bedroom. If I'm having this problem, I usually find something educational on PBS or something that is kind of interesting but not fascinating. You'll watch for awhile and it will lull you to sleep.

its rare that it happens, i am usually so exhausted that i just fall asleep almost immediately. However, when that does happen if I am worrying about a bill or something, I try to think of happy things, my daughters, funny situations in my life. that ussually works.
