I find myself arguing with my boyfriend alot, and getting incredibly stressed out... I herd that it is bad for the baby. How true is this and does anyone have any suggestions for relaxation. Thanks!

Yes, studies are starting to show that stress can affect the baby, but how much would depend on how much stress the mom is under.

The body produces the hormone cortisol when under stress.

If you're talking about normal day to day worries, then it's nothing to be concerned about that amount of cortisol won't create a problem. You'll feel some symptoms of stress but your body can deal with it.

It's when stress is constant that the cortisol may be too much for mom and high blood pressure may result.

Too much stress can also cause the mother to make lifestyle changes that aren't good for her baby - i.e. eating too little, eating too much, smoking, drinking. etc.

For relaxation I would suggest a nightly "wind down" ritual for yourself. Something soothing and pleasurable to look forward to. It could be a warm bubble bath with essential oils, rubbing down with lotion and then maybe some hot tea and a snack or dessert.

This could be a time when you don't answer the phone or check email or anything like that.

Maybe you could give each other a relaxing massage and this would also help you bond. You know, both do something nice.

You also say "I find myself arguing..." sort of like it "just happens." But arguing is something you can control. If you make a conscience effort not to be confrontational you will not only save yourself from stress....but him, too. Every time you want to snap back or be negative or pick a fight, tell yourself "this is not good for me...or for him...or for the baby so I'm going to stop it right now."

Do this consistently and you will start to argue less and see how much better harmony is.
