I should try out for the debating team because he said he has never seen anything quite like me before in his 26 year long career. He is one of few teachers I actually have respect for. What are the pros and cons of joining the debate team?
I am 16 and a tad spoiled. Thank you and good day.

Emawee, in the debate team we argue about issues. It gives me good practice for arguing with daddy about my clothing budget.

Silver Sky - please do not dis Emawee's daddy. Please note that spoiled teenage girls have extraordinary talents of persuasion that are simply not admissable in most courts of law. Therefore, it's really comparing pickles to peaches. Thank you and good day.

Pros- looks good on college applications, can lead to scholarships or recognition, teaches you excellent public speaking skills and research methods, may make you more aware of current issues in society, and you may even stumble on a subject you are really interested in. Teaches you effect arguing (debating) skills and also how to listen to both sides of an issue.
Cons- if you're spoiled you may not like losing :)
Go for it, you may discover a hidden talent. You can always bow out if you don't like it.

Wow, thats tight that he said that, i'd be hella happy if a teacher said that to me. Lemme guess, you actually understand peoples logic, and find faults or twist things to make them seem right? Class debates are so boring cause most people are too stupid to understand anything, and they use rhetoric more than logic.
Debate team is about open-ended topics...kinda unlike clothing. Actually a lot unlike clothing, but thats ok. Topics are usually controverisial and have no right answer.
I remember I went to orientation for Debate freshman year...but I didn't end up doing it. What I gathered was that you prepare an argument for both sides of the issue, and you go debate w/ someone for like an hour or more, then you go and debate the other side for like an hour.
Pros cons? It takes up hella time. But if thats what you like doing, then go for it! sounds lame, but you really should go and do things you like.
Btw...debates don't really have anything to do w/ arguments. Debates are structured, whereas arguments usually involve 100% emotion, stubborness, and always end w/ personal comments.

Do it. You'll get even more articulate and you already choose your words carefully. Your teacher obviously has your back. he'll give you pointers and such. My high school never had a debate team, but back then I was too shy to do it. Go start up an argument about childhood obesity or something else close to heart that you are passionate about. Debate teams produce proper adults as far as speaking in a non-threatening manner. You will get your way and completely blindside them.

The pros of debating are that you become more articulate. You must not only state a position but must be able to back it up.You are forced to look at both sides of an argument and realize that someone else may not agreee with your opinion but they also have valid points.I suppose the only negative would be that you may not be on the winning side every time LOL. Honestly I can't think of a con to debating.

The pros: It'll look great on college applications. It'll help you to become a better public speaker. It'll prepare you for the many speeches and presentations you'll have to give while in college.
The cons: it'll take up a lot of your time, it may be challenging at first and some people might have stereotypes about debate team members.

You can't live your whole life worried that someone will think you are a "dork". I think it would be helpful for you to join the debate team. I debate things all the time in my day to day life and it just might boost your confidence. In the end the choice is yours. Join or don't join, but make your choice because it is what YOU want to do. Good luck!!

I think you should join. It would look great on any kind of application, and think of all the stories you'll have to tell when you're older.. Some might call you geeky, but there could be worse things that, right?
