I think the French figured they put one over on the Americans.

It was a huge tract of land that they had only rough maps of, since most of their explorers sent there never returned. It was wild country, and they hadn't really settled more than a fraction of the part along the coast. Their experience in the French-Indian wars had them thinking it wasn't something people as civilized as the French would ever tame to their own satisfaction.

I think they found it to be a logistical albatross. Ships to and from there were subjected to Carribean pirates, and they were probably happier not needing to deal with that.

I think they also probably figured that if it ever did become civilized, the distance would have their colony more attached to the Americans anyway, ultimately leading to a war of Independence for their colony, or a war with America when they discovered the idea of Manifest Destiny.

In short, I think they may have seen the loss of the colony as inevitable, and the money as a windfall.

The US bought it because it was cheaper and faster than war with France over it, and the purchase justified running off the Natives who still lived there and didn't know they were French.

Did you know the Americans did not purchase the Louisiana Territory directly from the French? The British were the middlemen.
