scully is very knowledgable and un bias. He calls a very clean game and is a pleasure to listen to. Having said that, if i was a cub fan i would love listening to cary, or as i am a card fan i did love listening to jack buck. I would turn the radio on and mute the tv when jack was alive during the cards games. But both of those guys were very pro thier teams, with cary's 7th inning stretch root root root for the cubbies and bucks go crazy folks go crazy!!!!! Scully is the best at delievering the game with no personal preference or opinions involved. I also like twib.

I don't know if you can really have a "greatest" announcer of all time simply because the truly great ones all have their own style. Scully definitely is in that very elite class of broadcasters however, that actually understands how to describe a game. The folks that are critical of someone with his style have provbably been nrought up on televised baseball rather then actually listening to a radio call fairly often, and have had announcers who tend to use cute little phrases such as "he gone" "duck snort", etc., or who seem to think that the fans are tuning in to see how clever they can be, or who tend to over analyze the game with the use of meaningless statistics (here comes Manny Ramirez, who is hitting .412 with runners in scoring position in games played in the Pacific time zone on Wednesdays against left handed pitchers with 7 letters in their last name.) Scully's style is really a byproduct of 2 things. First being that he is a radio guy through and through. The object of a radio man and a TV man in broadcasting a game is completely different. The TV man is simply adding to the picture the viewer is seeing, while the radio man must actually attempt to create that picture in the listener's mind. As for Scully talking constantly, keep in mind that he works alone usually. He can't simply sit back and wait for a color man to fill a moment or two while he sits back and listens. I'm guessing that most of the fans under the age of 25 or so will NEVER understand what makes Scully one of the best at his craft. These are the same types who will put someone like Chris Berman, Chip Caray or Jon Miller up on a pedestal for the simple reason that they are more about style then substance. The same generation will probably also never appreciate anyone from Scully's generation - whether it be Harry Caray, Jack Brickhouse, Ernie Harwell, Bob Prince, Mel Allen, Red Barber or any of dozens of others who could actually paint a picture with their words. It's a shame they've missed out on them.

I don't know, but he sure is one of them. He and Joe Garagiola were priceless on Game of the Week years ago.
I think that Mel Allen was the greatest. He had the right voice and really knew the game, and TWIB has been worthless since his passing. Dave Niehaus is still great, and he's done Mariner games since their inception in 1977. Bob Prince was great, too.
Nowadays, almost all of the national guys suck. Miller and Morgan are OK, but I hate Tim McCarver, Rick Sutcliffe (who always sounds drunk), and the immensely overrated Joe Buck.
And, even though he is an analyst and not an announcer, Peter Gammons has really lost his game. He's been terrible ever since he came back from that illness.

I don't think Vin likes today's baseball as much as he did in the 70's and 80's. There is a little bit of magic missing there.
He's in the top 10 annoucers of all time for sure.

The greatest baseball announcer ever is Mel Allen period.
He brought magic to the radio.

Of course I'm biased being a longtime A's fan, but I'd say Bill King is one of the best. I sure do miss his announcing.
Rest in Peace Bill King.

He may once have been, but he's long since lost his touch. When I listen to him (admittedly only when the Dodgers play my favorite team) he repeats the same anecdotes over and over and mispronouncing names of visiting players. As a non-Dodgers fan, he's painful to listen to.
