The Great Depression was a very devastating event that began in the United States and quickly spread to other parts of the world. International trade delclined sharply, along with personal income, tax revenues, prices, and profits. Those who were dependent on heavy industry were hit hard. Millions lost their jobs, which brought upon depression within families. Overall, it was an unforgetable event, but I'm glad the economy pulled through and is no longer in that state.

My dad lived thru it in Chicago.
He lived in an apartment. Unheated.
He had a checking account at a bank. It went out of business and took his money.
He was a carpenter. No one would hire him.
He stood in a lot of lines waiting for free food.
I think he was 21 at the time. One day; working, the next day, economy fell, the next day; out of work and no jobs to be found...
Said that the next president got everything back to working again. Something about "prime the pump." Said existing president at the time did nothing to help people out of work. Was always angry about this.
He lived to 97 and up to his death he was STILL bothered by what he went thru in the depression.

My father lived during the great depression. I can tell that it affected his life permanently. Even to this day, my dad still tends to act like he does not know where his next meal is coming from, although he is fairly well-to-do from the standpoint of the assets that he holds.

My mother used to talk about it. They were very poor.
Her brothers would steal gas, food and take whatever work they could find.
Her mom canned whatever food she could and made their clothes out of feed or flour sacks. They put cardboard in the holes in their shoes to keep the water out.
When someone got a lipstick or nylon stockings it was considered a total treat and rarely happened.
The worst part was...there was no inside plumbing. They used a outhouse and toilet paper was in short supply!!
Nobody left a crumb on ther dinner plates because food was scarce.
Many business men killed themselves...jumping from buildings, etc. They went broke quickly and couldn't face being poor.
It was very dark, very tough. They never forgot it and reminded us how lucky we were to have food, a warm bed, inside plumbing, etc.
