How about astronomer?

Every research scientist adds a little knowledge to science. It is no different in astronomy. Nobody will pay for you to gaze out into the heavens just to ponder things. The likes of Einstein and Hawkins were not paid to do this - once they became the tops in their professions, they had the luxury of being able to ponder things and people would sit up and listen to what they said about the universe. But their pay would have come from research dollars and lecturing. As a researcher, you will be paid to study a tiny part of the science. As you proceed, your research will get broader. You will most likely be channeled into a particular line of research and early on you won't get much choice. When you get your professorship you will then be able to make some choice into where to channel your research. Since most research monies come out of whatever funding is allocated to the Universities (apart from industry, of course), you are very often confined by what the funding is for. It is not like the pre20th century when very rich individuals funded their own research, so they could more or less research what they wanted. Of course, if you have got a few million dollars or can get a private sponsor who has got that money, you too can channel your own reserach. But even then the sponsor would want to know that he might get something out of your research. But keep your ambitions going. Science is all about chipping away at knowledge. And ultimately science is the what will ultimately save humanity. The day we all dump superstition and religious differences, is the day peace will reign, and your part in science, whatever else it achieves will make another step towards that goal.
