For Kathy and John who move to what is supposed to be the ideal setting but then Kathy disappears, it's all about what might have been, that ghosts from the past not only haunt our real existence by they make up who we are, and even sometimes that is good. It's an eerie novel with a lot of plot twists and misunderstandings. Magic helps to give us the notion that not everything that is in the past is passed and not everything that is over really is gone forever.
