Silver dollars were made from .900 fine silver (90 % of the metal was pure silver -- less than an ounce.)

The most common real silver dollars around today are the Morgan and Peace types. They are 38.1 mm in diameter and are made of .900 silver and .100 copper. The actual silver weight is .77344 troy oz. That is, if they are not worn very much. They never really circulated much in the east, but did in the west.

there is 90% silver in these old $1.00 coins....and there is 36% of an ounce of silver per coin....minus wear...if the wear is too extensive you have to calculate by weight
