kamcrash, when 4n is isolated, why do the 36 and 5 go negative?

You need to distribute the 4 across what's in parentheses. So,

5 + 4n + 4*9 = -3
5 + 4n + 36 = -3
4n + 41 = -3
4n = -44
n = -11

Or, think of the (n+9) quantity as a variable X
5 + 4X = -3
4X = -8
X = -2
n+9 = -2
n = -11

First, distribute the 4
5 + 4n + 36 = -3
Then isolate the n
4n = -3 - 5 - 36
combine like terms
4n = -44
divide by 4
n = -11
