Dude, have you seen the news lately? Not functioning too well when there is an uprising of those who oppose the people who put themselves in charge, and wreak havoc on the world.

First, is to ask whether they function at all?
China has laxed its control over the economy in such a way that one wonders if they are even communists at all, at least in classical sense. As far as I know, besides robust welfare and social services, it is fairly devoid of socialist ideals, a huge factor in communist theory. Therefore, given its uni-partisan regime, I'd classify China as more of a quasi-fascist state rather than a self-proclaimed communist state. One thing I am sure of is China is very bureaucratic and jam-packed with social workers and ordinance officers.
As for North Korea and Cuba, what more can be said other than uni-partisan, hyper-coercive bureacracies.
What's most ironic is how, besides maybe China, the welfare and wellbeing of the people of these countries are extremely dilapidated, while the very political theory they're governments are based on pledges to uphold those very same values.

it would desire to be argued that there are actually not any communist states. China runs a single celebration capitalist state, Cuba and N. Korea are militia dictatorships the place all financial interest is controlled by the state. Marxist economics basically would not artwork and any state that has tried it, quickly provides it up because of the fact the country descends into chaos, changing to a device of state controlled capitalism. the belief of the dictatorship OF the proletariat has been replaced to dictatorship OVER the proletariat

Communism is as social consciousness, i.e.. if you live in a society that has, for example, humans in it, then you have socially conscious creatures that have concept for their social relations, which in their notion may or may not reflect the reality that forms them, i.e. superstition versus science. The notion that 'communism' is a distinct ideology is false, i.e. either you are communistic or you are completely anti-social.
Generally, communism as a notion in those who idealize themselves as 'communist' are people living in our urbanized industrialized, mechanized stage of human social development. Given the reality of populations that could not be imagined 200 or 300 years ago, these contingent conditions that distinguish our time in history from previous human conditions make them worlds apart. Each nation that self declares its self ''communist'' have their own unique histories, historical birth conditions and intermediate transformations. Cuba, in my mind, has become more naturopathic, while China and North Korea have become the new human self estrangement. With all the knock off production and patent theft or infringement, the condition appears almost comical in China if it were not for the military and birth control debauch. They have become more of a nationalized capitalism, and based on my intuition alone, a stagnant philosophical activity. Political competition is in the one communist party but in China there is much independant competition in industry but not so much in North Korea. Cuba seems closest to developing a positive universal concept, while China and North Korea are hostile and desparate, even in China's economic growth. Of course the US is heavily indebt finacially to China. I am not certain if this good for China or not. China is not a very environmental nation and Cuba is showing much better in that respect and in medical service development.
Proper Marxist sociological conception: http://www.marxists.org/archive/marx/works/1844/manuscripts/comm.htm
"General envy constituting itself as a power is the disguise in which greed re-establishes itself and satisfies itself, only in another way. The thought of every piece of private property as such is at least turned against wealthier private property in the form of envy and the urge to reduce things to a common level, so that this envy and urge even constitute the essence of competition. Crude communism is only the culmination of this envy and of this levelling-down proceeding from the preconceived minimum. It has a definite, limited standard. "

Generally by the good grace of capitolist ones, but only while they behave.Communism would probably be an ideal philosophy if you could only stop people from becoming involved in it.It will never reach the ideals that were originally laid out.Because ultimate power corrupts ultimately, and equality is a pipe dream

They are not truly communist. In Marx's communism there would be no absolute government because government=unequal distribution of power.
