If it is one oceanic and one continental, the oceanic is usually subducted under the continental. The continental plate is uplifted, forming a mountain chain like the Andes. Oceanic-oceanic--one plate is subducted, and a trench is formed. This type of convergent plate boundary produces island arcs like Hawaii. The last is continental-continental. This type of collision produces mountain chains like the Himalayas. I attached a link that has some visuals for you.

One plate goes up, and one plate goes down. The tectonic action can cause earthquakes and volcanic activity, but mostly the plate going up rises a bit.
